Netcat differs a lot in syntax across versions.

Examples

Test localhost port 8080, verbose (-v), only scan for listening demons (-z):
nc -vz localhost 8080

Start a listening demon on port 1312:
nc -l 1312

Connect interactively:
nc localhost 1312
